Kolo is a popular snack in Ethiopia made of roasted barley and spices. Let’s dive into what makes kolo so special and other creative ways to enjoy it!
I was dating this wonderful gentleman a few months back, and he LOVED this blog. He was so inspired by it that he bought me this huge bag of Kolo.
“I thought you could do something with it for your blog,” he said.
I was so touched 🥹
He went to a new Ethiopian restaurant with a friend and they served him complementary Kolo. He liked it and thought it was unique, so here I am researching and writing about it.
Since moving to San Diego I haven’t had much time to dedicate to this blog (as much as I really want to). But this guy gave me the little nudge I needed to get back on track!
Even though we’re no longer dating, I’m still inspired to make a few posts out of his gift. If you’re reading this, Dave, thank you!

What is Kolo?
Kolo is a popular snack in East Africa made of dry-roasted barley mixed with salt, spices, and sometimes peanuts.
It’s often served as a snack with coffee or beer. In Ethiopian culture, sharing Kolo is a common social activity, much like sharing a bowl of popcorn or roasted nuts.
What does Kolo taste like?
Kolo has a nice crunch and nutty flavor.
It can be found in different variations, with some recipes adding additional ingredients like roasted chickpeas or lentils. It can also vary in flavor if spiced with berber, sweetened with sugar, or simply sprinkled with salt.
Where can I buy kolo?
You can find Kolo in specialty stores, international markets, or online retailers. Some Ethiopian restaurants sell bags of Kolo. You can ask your local restaurant if they sell them. Otherwise, make your own (recipe coming soon)!
Is Kolo good for you?
Kolo is made of whole roasted grains and legumes, which can have nutritional benefits, but like any snack, make sure you enjoy it in moderation (especially Kolo because it’s calorically dense).
Here are some health benefits of Ethiopian Kolo:
- Excellent source of plant-based protein
- Rich in dietary fiber, which can help digestion
- A good source of iron, magnesium, and phosphorus

How do you eat Kolo?
In Ethiopia, Kolo is served in small bowls, making it easy to either pour into one’s hand or grab a handful. Once in your hand, tilt your head back and pop the grains into your mouth!
To get creative, you can use Kolo as a crunchy topping for yogurt, ice cream, soups, or salads.
How do I store Kolo?
Store Kolo in a cool, dry place in an airtight container to protect it from air exposure, which can cause it to stale.
